Sennheiser OMX 70 Sport Earphones Review

by Jake last modified 11/06/2006 @ 09:24

A review of the new OMX 70 sport earphones from Sennheiser.

Sometimes being green is easy, like wearing the new Sennheiser OMX 70 earphones with your iPod.

Packaging & First Impressions

The Sennheiser OMX70 earphones come in a plastic case which at first glance looks like one of the ones that you have to open with a blowtorch. To our delight, it was not. Inside we found the usual assortment of things including the earphones, covers, a wire clip and a big white rubber case, which turned out to be a holder for the earphones not an alien contraceptive device.

Greens vs White

In the iPod world, white earphones are a both a sign of your loyalty and that you have a $300 iPod in your pocket. It can be both good and bad at times. In our test neighborhood (built from scratch) we find that white earphones get us the wrong type of attention while out running the streets. The Sennseiser breaks the bounds of white and goes instead for a florescent neon green, a color that just says "HELLO!"

Since these earphones are mainly for the active bunch, we had to break out of the labs for our tests. We are also very in love with our new iPod Shuffle sp we took this as a good opportunity to see how both worked in the real world.

The OMX70 earphones went on pretty easy. The earphones are in two parts, right and left, so each one slips up and around your ear. The last part of the earphone rod extends about a quarter of an inch for those of us with bigger or smaller ears which is a nice feature. The earphone cord is kept in circles so it has a bit of elasticity to it which we found useful.

With the earphone on, our iPod Shuffle loaded we hit the gym for a workout.

Good to Go

The Sennheisers perfromed very well. They sounded great handling the low bass of rap to the high pitched whine of Prince (don't ask). They also were comfortable for the sixty minutes we tested them. Unlike other "sport" earphones these actually stayed in place and didn't need re-adjustment. Overall we were very happy with the results and think these earphones hit the mark.

Pros, Cons & Rating

Pros

  • Sound good
  • Stay put in ears
  • Good price

Cons

  • Rubber Case
  • Black option would be nice
iPod Guy 8

Conclusion

We have tried a lot of sport earphones and these are the latest to capture our heart. While they might be shockingly green, they stay in place, sound good and free up the user to actually get a workout. If you need something for the gym the Sennheiser OMX70 will do very nicely.
