Revolutionary iPhone a Crappy PDA?
A new update to the functionality on the forthcoming iPhone might make it a crappy PDA and huge setback for Palm/Treo user adoption.
David Pogue, of the New York Times, answers more than a few questions about the iPhone as he winds up his big two week review. Although a lot of the questions were geared to high end features one answer really struck home..
Do To Do items show up on the iPhone? Do memos in the iPhone’s Notes program show up on the computer? No.
So it seems like the iPhone will not only not be able to sync your memos to the notes application but will also not include to dos from your calendar. As we are big Treo and Palm users here at iPodTips.com this has gone over like a lead balloon. The most basic of phones and the dumbest of smart phones have always had the ability to have tasks. The first Palm from over eleven years ago supported Memos, Tasks, Addresses and Calendars which quickly and easily synched up to your computer. Now APple is about to launch a "revolutionary" new device which doesn't support two of the four most basic PDA functions.
Sure, we are excited as the next person about the phone features, the full web browsing and great iPod capability but if Apple is trying to go after the millions of Palm/Treo users out there they are going to be in for a big surprise. Is the GTD camp going to live without a task or two? Are the people who take notes on the their Treo or Palm going to want to give up that very basic function? We doubt it very much.
As with all things Apple has announced, the iPhone has the ability to have software updates which include new functionality. Apple's new OS, 10.5 Leopard does have Notes and Tasks built into the Mail application and maybe that points to a future direction but ff they have any sense at all they will put this at the top of the list so the can at least be as good as an Palm Pilot 5000 from 1996.
At the end of the day we will be waiting in line to buy our iPhone and looking forward to reviewing it here, but this news has a put a huge damper on our overall excitement and lust for something to replace our Treo 680.
