What application features can we expect from the iPhone?
A quick look at some of the features found in Mac OSX applications and how they might apply to the iPhone. This article is part wish list, part thought process with some predictions thrown in for good measure.
So little is actually known about the iPhone at this point it is hard to get a grasp on the actually features and functionality the each of the applications will have. While the demos that have been released show the iPod, Safari and Mail there is still much left out of the address book, calendar, tasks and notes that could be a big boon or bust. There has been a lot of talk of whether or not Apple will allow third party applications but we thought we would try to question the applications we know are going to be on the phone. Here is out break down which is part wish list part speculation but all iPhone. We put a probability percentage next to each one as our uneducated guess.
iPhone Calendar
iCal on OSX has a lot of built in features and integration points into other applications, will the iPhone calendar have some of these?
- Will it support multiple calendars? (95%)
- Will it includes tasks? (95%)
- Will you be able to invite people to events? (60%)
- Will it sync from .Mac or pull down changes to published calendars? (30%)
iPhone Address Book
What we saw in the demo was a very basic view of the address book. We saw a picture and basic contact information like phone and email. What we didn't see was a lot of other stuff that is currently built into the 10.4 version of Address Book
- Will it support groups and smart groups? (50%)
- Will it have birthdays and anniversaries and will those carry over to the calendar? (60%)
- Will it support relationship (sibling, parent, etc) and be able to click through to those? (40%)
- Will it sync with .Mac or other online services? (25%)
iPhone Mail
Again this is something we saw quick demo of in the keynote. We saw full html and IMAP support, we saw photos and Address Book lookup. We know it will sync settings with Mail.app. All very good things. We didn't see a lot though.
- How many accounts will it support? (10 - 95%)
- Will it have junk mail filtering? (50%)
- Will you easily be able to jump from mail to the persons contact information? (90%)
- Will it support Smart Folders? (75%)
iPhone Notes
This is probably the most unknown application because there is no Apple application to compare it to. There is a notes feature in OSX 10.5 which is built into Mail but very little is known about that as well.
- Will it support rich text? (50%)
- Will it support categories or groups? (40%)
- Will it support attachments? (25%)
So much to look forward to in the next month or so. So many questions will be answered and it will only cost us a measly $500.
